One-Year B.Ed Course in India under NEP : Complete Guide

Teacher education in India has undergone major reforms with the introduction of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. One of the most anticipated reforms is the reintroduction of the One-Year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) program, designed specifically for candidates with advanced academic qualifications.

Below is a comprehensive overview of the current status, eligibility criteria, admission process, fees, and course structure of the 1-year B.Ed program in India.

1. Overview of the One-Year B.Ed Program

For nearly a decade, the Bachelor of Education degree in India has been offered as a two-year program. To streamline teacher training for candidates who have already completed extensive higher education, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has developed a fast-track one-year B.Ed curriculum.

  • Objective: To prepare subject-specialized teachers for the secondary and senior secondary levels.

  • Current Status: As of late 2025, the NCTE has finalized the framework, and several central and state universities are expected to begin admissions for the 2026–27 academic session.

2. Eligibility Criteria

The one-year B.Ed program is a specialized pathway intended for academically advanced candidates with strong subject knowledge.

CategoryRequirement
PostgraduatesCandidates must hold a Master’s degree (MA, MSc, MCom, etc.) from a recognized university.
Four-Year UG Degree HoldersCandidates who have completed a four-year undergraduate honours or research degree under the NEP structure are eligible.
Minimum MarksGenerally, 50%–55% aggregate marks in the qualifying degree (relaxation applicable for SC/ST/OBC candidates as per government norms).

Note: Candidates with a traditional three-year bachelor’s degree are required to pursue the two-year B.Ed program.

3. Admission Process

The admission process varies across states and institutions but generally includes the following steps:

  • Entrance Examination: Most universities require candidates to qualify for an entrance test such as CUET-PG (for central universities) or state-level B.Ed Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE).

  • Counseling: Candidates are invited for counseling based on entrance exam merit to select colleges and subject specializations.

  • Document Verification: Verification of academic certificates, category certificates (if applicable), and identity proof.

  • Seat Allotment: Final admission is granted based on merit, availability of seats, and chosen pedagogy (e.g., Mathematics, Science, Social Studies).

4. Course Fees

The fee structure varies depending on the type of institution:

  • Government or Government-Aided Colleges: ₹5,000 – ₹25,000 per year

  • Private Institutions: ₹50,000 – ₹1,20,000 per year

  • Distance/Correspondence Mode: Although some universities offer B.Ed programs through distance mode (e.g., IGNOU), the one-year B.Ed is primarily offered in regular, face-to-face mode due to its intensive training requirements.

5. Course Structure and Syllabus

Despite its shorter duration, the one-year B.Ed program is academically rigorous and practice-oriented.

  • Core Courses: Childhood and Growing Up, Contemporary India and Education, Learning and Teaching

  • Pedagogy Subjects: In-depth training in subject-specific teaching methods such as Physics, Biology, History, or Mathematics

  • Internship: A mandatory six-month school internship, either integrated or conducted concurrently, to provide hands-on classroom experience

Future Outlook

The one-year B.Ed program is part of a broader reform in teacher education. Over time, all teacher education programs will transition toward the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP). By 2030, only multidisciplinary higher education institutions will be authorized to offer teacher education courses.
